Special Correspondent: The Cabinet Committee on Public Procurement has approved a proposal to import one lakh tonnes of white rice (Atap) from Myanmar in a bid to meet the food crisis in the country.
The approval came at a meeting chaired by Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed at the secretariat on Wednesday noon.
The commerce minister presided over the meeting as Finance Minister AMA Muhith was staying outside the country.
Replying to a query, Food Minister Qamrul Islam said, “One lakh tonnes of white rice (Atap) are being imported from Myanmar to increase the food stock although there is no food crisis in the country.”
The meeting was attended by the cabinet committee members, senior secretaries of the cabinet division, secretaries of the concerned ministry and other top officials.
