Quota protesters demand gazette within Thursday

Staff Correspondent: Leaders of quota reform movement on Wednesday issued an ultimatum to the government for publishing within Thursday the gazette on abolishing the quota system in government job as per the prime minister's decision.

Otherwise, they will wage a tougher movement form the next Sunday.

Protesting students’ platform Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad Convenor Hasan Al Mamun gave the ultimatum from a human chain programme on the Dhaka University campus on Wednesday.

‘If the gazette notification is not published within Thursday, we will wage protests again from Sunday,’ he said.

He said that many days had passed since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced in parliament that the quota system would be abolished but there was no visible initiative to implement the announcement.

Thousands of students attended the human chain programmme.

On Tuesday, Senior Secretary of Public Administration Ministry Md Mozammel Haque Khan said the Ministry has yet not received the final directives from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over cancellation of quota system to issue a gazette in this regard which she announced in the Parliament.

He said it is not possible to issue gazette cancelling quota system without the directives and suggestions from PM as she herself announced to abolish it.
