Rampal plant: Dhaka, Calcutta would also be harmed

Staff Correspondent: Sultana Kamal, convener of the National Committee to Save Sundarban, said that Rampal power plant will harm not only Sundarban but also the people in Dhaka and Calcutta (India).
She made the opinion while addressing a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity auditorium in the capital on Friday.
Sultana Kamal said that people in Dhaka and Calcutta, particularly children and the elderly, would also be harmed.
The plant alone would cause the premature deaths of 6,000 people, and low birth weights of 24,000 babies, she added.
According to a report, over its operational lifetime, the plant’s emissions will increase the risk of stroke, lung cancer, heart and respiratory diseases in adults, as well as respiratory symptoms in children.
