Reckless drivers should be stopped at any cost

The life of Government Titumir College student Rajib Hossain ended quite tragically, at only 21, in reckless driving of two buses in the city.

On April 3, Rajib was going to attend his classes by a double-decker bus of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BTRC). He was standing on the rear gate dangling his right hand outside as the bus was overcrowded.

When the bus got stranded at the Sonargaon crossing on Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue of Karwarn Bazar, a 'Sajan Paribahan' bus tried to make its way through the narrow space in between the BRTC bus and the footpath. However, Rajib's right hand was pressed in between the two buses and got severed from the elbow. He also sustained injuries on his head.

Being rescued, he was first taken to MH Samorita Hospital at Panthapath. Later, he was shifted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries on the night of April 16, two weeks after he had been undergoing treatment there.

With the last breathe of Rajib, all of his dreams came to an end. He became parentless at an early age.  He lost his mother when he was a third-grader. His father also left him alone when he was in class eight.

Then, he came to one of his aunties (sister of mother) home at the capital’s Motijheel. He took a part time job a computer shop along with his studies. With the money he earned from the computer shop, he afforded expenses of his own and two of his brothers who are in class six and eight.

Rajib had dreamt to be self-reliant and hoped to make his two younger brothers as qualified. But all came to an end with the ill competition of reckless drivers.

Not only Rajib, But also many people have been victimised by such ill competition of bus drivers across the country every day.

After severing Rajib’s hand, a housewife’s backbone was fractured in between the two buses in the capitall’s New Market area.

A week after Rajib's accident, a bus smashed the right leg of a student named Runi Akhter against the pavement on the same Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue at Farmgate.

On April 17, just the following day of Rajib’s death, a youth also lost one of his hands in road crash in Gopalganj. A reckless truck torn off a hand of the youth who was in a bus. Besides, road crashes claimed lives of many people at different places across the country. Many people are being injured or crippled in accidents.

According to news published in media, a rule against the authorities concerned was issued as to why Rajib should not be paid Tk one crore as compensation.

The High Court (HC) came up with the rule after a writ petition filed in this regard which is still under trial.

Though Rajib is no more, Barrister Ruhul Kuddus Kajal who filed the writ petition pledged to run the case.

Health Minister also gave an assurance of giving a job to Rajib.  We hope, the writ will be disposed within a short time and the compensation money will be given to Rajib’s two younger brothers.

The authorities concerned should not forget their promises of giving privileges to Rajib including a job.

We expect, they will stand by two of Rajib’s helpless brothers.

The authorities concerned should also be stricter against the drivers. They should ensure the rules and regulations in running vehicles on roads. The reckless should be stopped at any cost.

Traffic department of police and highway police must have to be more alert to stop reckless drivers on roads across the country including the capital Dhaka.

Fair use and confirmation of Traffic Act is urgent to reduce road crashes and to bring discipline in transport management.

Effective steps should also be taken to make the drivers to follow the traffic signals and specific speeds properly.
