Review appeal on 16th amendment verdict submitted

Staff Correspondent: The review petition against the Supreme Court verdict on the 16th amendment of the Constitution has been filed.

The state submitted 908-page review appeal on Sunday morning.

Earlier on July 3, seven members Appellate Division, led by then Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha declared the 16th Amendment to the constitution illegal.

The SC, on 8 May last, began the hearing rejecting the time petition filed by attorney general Mahbubey Alam.

On May 8, the Supreme Court began the hearing on an appeal against the High Court verdict that scrapped the 16th amendment of the constitution.

The apex court on February 8 requested 12 senior jurists to place before it their expert opinions on the appeal as amicus curiae.

The parliament approved the 16th amendment on September 17, 2014. On May 5 last year, a High Court division bench declared the 16th amendment illegal. The government on January 4 filed an appeal with the Appellate Division challenging the HC decision.
