Ronaldo preserves remarkable record

Sports Desk: The Real Madrid forward helped to lead from the front once more in a Confederations Cup clash, with his 56th effort of the season netted from the spot.

Club or country, it does not matter to Cristiano Ronaldo as he continued his remarkable scoring run at the Confederations Cup.

The Real Madrid superstar enjoyed a stunning sequence of games to end his 2016-17 campaign, netting 16 times in his final 10 fixtures.

That haul included hat-tricks at the quarter-final and semi-final stage of the Champions League, before finding the target twice in a final victory over Juventus.

Ronaldo’s fine form has continued in the colours of Portugal, with a brace in a World Cup qualifier against Latvia followed by two efforts at the Confederations Cup – taking him to 56 in 55 games.

His latest goal came in a meeting with New Zealand, as Euro 2016 winners Portugal took aim at the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup.

Ronaldo helped to put them in control of the contest, after being presented with an opportunity to convert from the penalty spot.

He made no mistake, and Manchester City new boy Bernardo Silva added a second for Portugal before half-time.

Ronaldo now has 75 goals in 142 appearances for his country.
