SC orders to dispose Khaleda’s appeal by Oct 31

Staff Correspondent: The Appellate Division of Supreme Court has ordered the High Court to dispose by October 31 a review petition filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Tuesday.

Earlier on May 16, the SC upheld the High Court order that had granted bail to the convicted BNP chief in the graft case and also issued an order to dispose of Khaleda's appeal challenging the lower court's verdict in the case by July 31.

Later, Khaleda’s lawyer filed a review petition on June 25 saying that the hearing on the petition would not finish by this time.

On July 12, the Supreme Court kept the petition stand over till July 31.

Besides, the SC also asked the High Court to start the hearing on a review petition filed by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia against a lower court verdict sentencing five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

On February 8, the Dhaka Special Court-5 convicted the former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson and sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

She was then sent to old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the city.
