SC to hear verdict on compensating Jihad's family

Staff Correspondent: The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday refused to stay a High Court (HC) verdict that directed the authorities concerned to pay Tk 20 lakh as compensation to the parents of Jihad, a four-year-old child who died falling into an open pipe at Shahjahanpur area in the capital in 2014.

Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, a chamber judge of the Appellate Division, sent a leave to appeal petition filed by the Fire Service and Civil Defense challenging the HC verdict to the full bench of the apex court.

The chamber judge also fixed February 5 after sending the matter to the apex court full bench for further hearing.

On February 18 in 2016, the HC had passed the order, asking Bangladesh Railway and Fire Service and Civil Defence authorities to give Jihad'a family Taka 10 lakh each in compensation.

The court came up with the order as advocate Halim filed a writ for Children Charity Bangladesh Foundation, seeking court's direction for giving Jihad's family Taka 30 lakh in compensation.
