Staff Correspondent: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld a High Court verdict that asked authorities concerned to pay Tk 20 lakh as compensation to the family of a four-year-old Jihad for his tragic death.
A four-member bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed an order on Sunday rejecting two-leave- appeal petitions.
Earlier on February 18 in 2016, the HC bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo pronounced the short verdict following a writ petition.
According to court verdict, the Railway authorities have to pay Tk. 10 lakh, while the Civil Defense authorities will pay the rest Tk. 10 lakh.
The HC bench ordered them to hand over the amount to the father and mother of child Jihad within 90 days.
Child Jihad died after he slipped into the deep pipe of an abandoned railway pump at Shahjahanpur Railway Colony in the city on December 26 in 2014.
Twenty-three hours into his fall, the body was recovered by a volunteer group from the deep well shaft using indigenous tool on December 27 despite the Fire Service and Civil Defence authorities repeated claim during rescue operation that there was no one inside trapped.
