Sagar-Runi murder probe report Feb 1

Staff Correspondent: A Dhaka court on Tuesday has again deferred the investigation report submission date in the case filed over the sensational murders of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.

With this, the submission deadline has been rescheduled 51 times.

As the probe report was not submitted to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court this time again, Judge Mazharul Haque fixed February 1, 2018 as the next deadline.

Earlier, the report’s submission was delayed 50 times in the past five years since the sensational murders. But Bangladesh’s elite force Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) failed every time to submit the report.

Maasranga Television news editor Sagar Sarowar and his wife ATN Bangla senior reporter Meherun Runi were found dead in their apartment in the city’s West Rajabazar area on 11 February 2012.

Following the murder, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police had launched an investigation. Later, the case was transferred to the Detective Branch of police.

However, on April 18, 2012, the High Court, in an order, moved the case to RAB for investigation as the former had expressed its inability to solve it.

At least eight people including the couple’s ‘family friend’ Tanveer Rahman had been arrested in connection with the killings.

Tanveer was released on bail later but the others are still in jail.
