Sampaoli to take charge of U-20s after Russia horror show

Sports Desk: Jorge Sampaoli has been handed a chance to save his job as he takes charge of the Argentina Under-20s.

The tactician saw his side outclassed as they were dumped out of the World Cup in the last 16 by France.

But it has been confirmed the 58-year-old's future will not be decided until the end of the month.

Sampaoli's assist Sebastian Beccacece was due to lead the whizkids in their COTIF L'Alcudia campaign in Valencia.

But he has left his post to take over Defensa y Justicia - leaving the seniors boss the chance to impress.

Under-fire Sampaoli  has been criticised for failing to get the best out of a side featuring Lionel Messi.

But after a meeting with Argentinian FA president Claudio Tapia and vice-president Daniel Angelici yesterday, he has been given more time.

An AFA statement confirmed: "In the next executive committee meeting, which is planned for the end of July, the members will make a joint evaluation about Sampaoli's work and future."

The COTIF L'Alcudia begins on July 28 and runs until August 7, with Sampaoli likely to survive for the duration.

But his position is far from secure amid reports he lost the Argentinian dressing room and allowed senior players to pick the team.
