Security beefed up at all jails, airports

Staff Correspondent: Authorities have beefed up security at all airports and prisons across the country after a suicide attacker blew himself up near a temporary camp of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Ashkona in capital’s Uttara area.

Confirming the matter to risingbd.com on Friday noon, Inspector General of Prisons Brig Gen Syed Iftekhar Uddin said the decision has been taken to issue red alert for all the jails across the country following the suicide blast at the Ashkona RAB camp in capital’s Uttara area.

Additional safety measures have been taken at every airport across the country following the incident, said Mahbubur Rahman Tuhin, public relations officer of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).

The red alert will be effective until the next direction was issued in this regard, the CAAB official added.

A suspected suicide bomber was killed and two RAB members were injured as bomb blew off on a Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) camp at Ashkona in capital’s Uttara area on Friday noon.

According to RAB sources, an unidentified youth entered the under-construction site climbing the wall of adjacent Hajj camp around 1:05pm.

When RAB members present there saw the unidentified young man, they challenged him. The young man started running away and at one stage one bomb, attached with his body, went off with a big bang, leaving him dead on the spot and two RAB men injured.

The injured RAB officials were admitted to Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

The incident took place a day after four suspected militants were killed during a special raid by joint forces on a militant hideout at Premtala in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong.
