Shahbagh blocked for restoration of quotas in govt jobs

Staff Correspondent: Freedom fighter quota beneficiaries under the banner Muktijoddha Sangsad Sontan Command have blocked Dhaka’s Shahbagh demanding restoration of 30 per cent quota for freedom fighters’ children and grandchildren.

They started their protest programme on Wednesday night and continued till Thursday noon when the report was filed.

Traffic came to a complete halt from Karwan Bazar to Shahbagh and Elephant Road to Shahbagh on Thursday.

Police diverted vehicles near the InterContinental Hotel intersection toward the commercial hub of Motijheel.

Earlier on Wednesday, a Cabinet meeting held with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair abolished quota system for class I and II jobs (from grade 9 to grade 13).

Earlier, a committee headed by the cabinet secretary on 17 September submitted a report to the Prime Minister recommending abolition of the quota system from 9th to 13th grade of government services.

The committee recommended recruiting officers to these posts on the basis of merit.

In April, students of public and private universities across the country waged a strong movement demanding reforms in the quota system in public service recruitment process.

In the face of the movement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced in parliament on April 11 the abolition of all types of quotas in government jobs.
