Shaheed Dr Milon Day today

Staff Correspondent: Today is Shaheed Dr Milon Day. The day is being observed across the country commemorating the 27th martyrdom anniversary of Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon.

On this day in 1990, Dr Milon was killed by the goons of military junta near Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University at the height of anti-autocracy movement.

The supreme sacrifice of Dr Milon transformed the anti-autocracy movement into a mass upsurge that prompted the fall of the autocratic regime paving the way for restoration of democratic process in the country.

On the eve of the day, President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages recalling the supreme sacrifice of Dr Milon for the cause of restoration of democracy.

The President, in his message, said Dr Milon was a bright star in democratic movement of Bangladesh.

He said Milon's sacrifice had expedited the democratic movement, paving the way for restoring democracy.

The people would remember Milon's sacrifice forever, Hamid said.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said the nation's quest for democracy was realized through the sacrifice of Dr. Milon.

Numerous democracy-loving people including Jubo League leader Nur Hossain, Nurul Huda, Babul and Fattha embraced martyrdom in the movement for restoring democracy, she said.

She paid respect to all who were martyred in the struggle for democracy.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul of Dr Milon.

Different political parties, socio-cultural and professional bodies have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe Shaheed Dr Milon Day.

The programmes of the day include placing of wreaths and offering of special prayers at the grave of Dr Milon on Dhaka Medical College (DMC) campus and at Milon Smrity Chattar (Square) near TSC.

Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasod) will hold a public meeting at Chourasta Park at Jatrabari in the city at 3:00 pm. Information Minister Hasanul Huq Inu will attend the meeting as chief guest.
