Social-cultural resistance against militancy should be raised

Law enforcers have again conducted an operation on suspicion of a militant hideout in Benipur area under Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district. The operation codenamed "Sun Devil" which lasted for two days ended with deaths of five militants and a firefighter. The firefighter was hacked to death by a female militant during the operation. Police claimed that all the militants died in the suicide blast. Law enforcers recover 11 bombs, one pistol, two rounds of bullets and one magazine from the militant hideout.

Law enforcers have been able to find out more militant dens at different places due to the ongoing anti-militant drive across the country. After getting trace of militant hideout at a remote area, it is believed that such hideouts may exist more in the country. But it is a matter of apprehension that militants who are living with their family members are using their living places as their hideouts. It has been evident that the network the militants have across the country is very strong. Tendency for suicide and building family unit have added a new dimension to the militancy issue.

It is seen that no militants show interest for surrender after law enforcers cordon off their hideouts although they were requested for surrender each time. Either they have carried out counter attack or died in the suicide blast. It has been clear that militants are being brainwashed in a very subtle way. As a result, they are sacrificing their lives without doubt which is a matter of concern.

Four out of five militants killed in the Godagari operation hailed from a family. They are Sajjad Ali (50), his wife Beli Aktar (45), their 18-year old son and 17-year old daughter. Another killed militant is a BSC engineer and he is said to be an active member of militant outfit. Abdul Matin, a firefighter, was also killed during the anti-militancy operation which is regretful. The law enforcers will have to be more careful during the operation in future. Otherwise, such incident can be repeated.

It has been a big challenge for the government to stop militant activities. This issue is not limited to Bangladesh now. Rather, it has now been a global issue. Bangladesh government has declared zero tolerance to curb the global issue. For this reason, Bangladesh has already earned major success in this regard. But the activities being carried out by the militants must be baffled by increasing detective surveillance in order to uproot the militancy from the country.

There are many local and international groups behind the rise of militancy in the country. It is urgent to stop the source of fund of militants. It is also needed to stop the supply of arms. Law enforcers will have to remain more conscious in this regard. Massive social-cultural resistance should be raised against militancy.
