Sports Desk: Fernando Hierro has been confirmed as Spain's manager for the World Cup after Julen Lopetegui was dramatically sacked on Wednesday morning.
The Real Madrid legend has taken over the national side a day before the tournament gets underway in Russia.
Spain made the decision to dismiss Lopetegui after Real announced he will be the man to succeed Zinedine Zidane after the World Cup.
President of the Spanish football federation, Luis Rubiales, said: "I know it's a very difficult situation. I know there's going to be criticism whatever I do.
"I'm sure this will, in time, make us stronger. I admire Julen very much, I respect him very much. He seems a top trainer and that makes it harder to make the decision.
"You can't do things this way, two or three days before the World Cup.
"We have been compelled to make this decision."
The Spanish FA are said to be furious with the way they found out Lopetegui had agreed to becoming the new Real Madrid manager.
Reports say they were told just minutes before Los Blancos made an official announcement.
The Spain players were keen for Lopetegui to stay on for the World Cup but he has been axed by the FA.
