Stephen Hawking will live on for his work

Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking, whose brilliant mind ranged across time and space though his body was paralysed by disease, passed away at the age of 76 on Wednesday (March 14). He died peacefully at his home in Cambridge, England. Hawking who possesses an extraordinary talent was attacked by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS which usually kills within three to five years, when he was 21, he stunned doctors by living with the normally fatal illness for more than 50 years. A severe attack of pneumonia in 1985 left him breathing through a tube, forcing him to communicate through an electronic voice synthesizer that gave him his distinctive robotic monotone. But he continued his scientific work like research on black holes and relativity and offered the world with many new theories of science.

Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, in Oxford, and grew up in London and St. Albans, northwest of the capital. In 1959, he entered Oxford University and then went on to graduate work at Cambridge. He was not a good student. Ultimately, he was a backbencher. He took higher education on Physics although his father wanted him to pursue higher study on medicine. Later, he stared teaching at Cambridge University. But, at the age of only 21 in 1962, he was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), a deadly disease. Despite suffering from the deadly disease, he has long defied and baffled medical experts who predicted he had just months to live. Only five per cent of people with the form of MND that he has a condition called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease survive for more than a decade after diagnosis.

By dint of his indomitable will power and perseverance, Hawking established himself as one of the best scientists of all time in the world. The best-known theoretical physicist of his time, Hawking wrote so lucidly of the mysteries of space, time and black holes that his book, “A Brief History of Time,” became an international best seller, making him one of science’s biggest celebrities since Albert Einstein. We deeply mourn the death of this great scientist.

His book “A Brief History of Time” was published in 1988 in which he wrote so lucidly of the mysteries of space, time and black holes. The book has created a tremendous enthusiasm among readers alongside scientists. His book was in the list of best selling books for consecutive five years. He was also the proponent of the mystery of creation of the universe “The Big Bang Theory”. This is why he got the dignity and popularity of a living legend. Fortunately, this great scientist died on the day when Albert Einstein was born (March 14).

Hawking kept on inventing theory one after one. Despite physical disability, he conducted research on physics for more than five decades. Moved by a wheel chair, he visited many countries. He attended many seminars and informed the people about the outcome of his new research on science. He had strong belief in the inventing power of human and repeatedly warned that it should not be right to misuse this power. Climate change in the world has made him deeply concerned and for this he expressed fear that the world may destroy. A few days ago, he suggested looking for another livable planet.

Hawking was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humour inspired people across the world. He once said, ‘It would not be much of a universe if it wasn’t home to the people you love.’ We will miss him forever. We pay humble tribute to this great scientist.
