Stop oppression on Rohingya people

Myanmar's north-western Rakhine state is in bad condition. More than 100 people have been killed in clashes between Rohingya rebels and Myanmar security forces since Friday. About 12 members of law enforcing agencies have also been killed, according to the news published in the media. It is said that this is the most horrific conflict since October last year. Thousands of people are fleeing from the northern region of the state.

According to the Myanmar government, on August 25, Rohingya rebels attacked a number of police outposts and an army base in the area together with stick, knife and hand bomb. Since then the conflict started between the two sides. A group named Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) has claimed the responsibility for the attack.

After the attack last year in a police checkpoint, violence spread there. Then the army started an operation against minority Rohingya Muslims. Thousands of Rohingya fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh due to the operation of the government forces. The same situation is happening this year. Rohingyas are fleeing to Bangladesh due to bloody conflict. Many are entering Bangladesh with bullet injuries and wounds. It is very worried.

But the Myanmar security forces have the responsibility behind the attack of the Rohingya Armed Group. In the middle of this month, situation began to deteriorate after the security forces launched an operation in the remote hilly area. Such situation was not desirable when the situation was calm. It has showed the Myanmar government's attitude to eradicate Rohingya. The Rohingyas were forced to leave the country through attacks and tortures at different times. Myanmar's doing on Rohingyas has violated all limits of civilization.

It is a matter of concern that the conflict began in less than 24 hours after submitting the final report of the commission headed by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan for the interest of Rakhine's future.

The 88 recommendations made in the final report including confirmation of Rohingyas' citizenship as well as withdrawal of restrictions on their movements. But due to this attack the implementation of UN recommendations may be hampered.

The terrorist attack that took place in Myanmar is not acceptable. Such attacks are unreasonable and illogical. No group can survive by declaring war against a state power. But it is not fair to put the liabilities on Rohingya people. There is also a need to investigate whether there is an anti-Muslim power behind the attack.

And there is no scope for denying the rights of any ethnic group in the civilized world. Rohingyas are Myanmar citizens. Myanmar will have to take responsibility for them. Myanmar has to take steps to stop conflicts soon. They have to stop killing and torture on the Rohingya people. We believe that the international community will take a prompt action very soon. Immediately the United Nations including world community will stand by the Rohingya community. They will put pressure on Myanmar to accept ethnic rights of Rohingya people.
