Student politics should get its pace

Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) will be held on March 11. Already the election schedule of DUCSU has been announced.

After a long hiatus of 28 years, the students' body in the country’s largest university will finally come into life following the election. The polls schedule was announced after the decision of the Supreme Court’s appellate division. According to the announcement, the nomination form distribution will be started from February 19 which will continue till February 25. The deadline to submit nomination forms is March 2.

The last DUCSU election was held in 1990. From then, there was no election due to various reasons. After a long pause, the DUCSU and hall elections are going to hold. Actually, the decision to hold the election is a positive sign. Several organizations including students’ wings were demanding the elections. Although, there is some disagreement among students’ organizations over some issues including election date and voter centers. Couple of students’ organizations are demanding voting centers outside of dormitories. Some of them demanded rescheduling of the polls.

Basically, fair environment and co-existence on the campus are equally important for all students’ organizations. It’s also the duty of the university authority to ensure the issue. The university authorities have to confirm that all students’ organizations can run their activities before the polls. Side-by -side, the students’ organizations should assist the authority creating an environment of co-existence. The law enforcers also have a role in this regard.

There is no doubt about the unique role of DUCSU and students in country’s politics. Students attain practical knowledge of democracy through the maintaining student parliament. As a result, the leadership qualities get developed. Dhaka University was the breeding ground of all kinds of democratic movements in Bangladesh since the language movement in 1952 to independence in 1971. Still DUCSU’s leaders are playing a leading role in the nation’s politics. A mentionable persons of the incumbent politicians are established through the DUCSU election.

We expect the much awaited DUCSU polls will be held in a merriment environment. The elections will be held in free, fair and credible manner with the participation of all creating future leaders and a fair democratic environment in the education sector. We also hope that the upcoming DUCSU polls will restore the old pride of students’ society. The stagnation of healthy student politics-culture for last 28 years in Dhaka University will be removed. General students will elect leaders applying their voting rights. Students’ politics should come into life through the polls. Similarly, steps should be taken to arrange election in all the universities and colleges. Election in all educational institutes should be held for the sake of nation’s greater interest.
