Students stage 12-point demand

Staff Correspondent: Agitated students of Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) staged a demonstration to press home 12-point demand as a bus killed their one of their fellows on Progati Sarani at Bashundhara Residential Area of the capital on Tuesday morning.

The students took the street immediate after the accident had taken place in the morning. They blocked the road and were chanting different slogans in protest of road crash.

Around 11:00am, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) mayor Atikul Islam rushed to the spot and met the students. He, then, gave assurance to meet their demands as soon as possible. He also asked the students to present the demand in written.

Later, students submitted their demands in written. The demands include sentencing driver, helper and owner of the Suprovat Paribahan bus that killed the student to to death by 10 days, cancelling root permit of the buses including Suprovat and Jabal-e-Nur Paribahan those committed such accidents today and earlier, implementing measure of dope test for drivers and helpers, making visible the identity cards of drivers and helpers of public transports, building footover bridge to be named after victim Abar and making Jebra cross in front of Bashundhara Residential Area/Jamuna Future park by two months and enacting separate buses or approving half-pass bus fare for students.

Mayor Atikul Islam said, “A footover bridge will be built at accident spot named after Abrar within two or maximum three months. No Suprovat buses will run in the capital. I have already asked the authority concern to take immediate actions in this regard.”
