Take measures to prevent price hike of commodities

Prices of essential commodities are going up continuously. Prices of onions and vegetables are going out of reach. Per Kilogram onion is being sold at Tk 55 in retail market.

On the contrary, Indian onion is being sold at Tk 50 per kg. Three days ago, the price of Indian onion increased up to Tk 10 in a day. Prices enhanced almost 75 percent in last one month.

Not only onion, prices of rice are also gearing up. Prices of course rice have gone up Tk 2 to Tk 3 per kg.   Market affiliates fear of increasing more.

Alongside, the prices of all other commodities are also going up.  No vegetables are available below Tk 50/60. Traders are blaming continuous rain for this. But, the price hike puts negative impacts on the life of common people.

At best 18 lakh tons of onion is produced a year in spite of the demand of 22 lakh tons across the country. The rest amount of onion is imported from India to meet the demand.

It was learnt that onion prices has also increased due to severe flood in the country. Meanwhile, the government said onion is now being imported from Egypt as well.

Meanwhile, the government also has taken a plan to import rice from Thailand to keep steady the market. Commerce Ministry has already told the parliamentary committee that the duty on rice import has lessened fixing it at 5 percent.

Prices of commodities are decreased on different religious occasions in different countries.  But our country always witnesses the reverse situation.  Here traders starts competition how much they can make profit increasing prices.

So, the market becomes unstable and affects the lives of common people. We frequently see dishonest traders create artificial crisis in the market to make it unstable. Considering time, demand and opportunities, they target a product to make much profit.

There are allegations that prices of commodities are increased through syndicate. But, it is urgent to stop this. The syndicate of dishonest traders must be prevented to remove the market instability. The authorities concerned should be more alert in this regard. The Food Ministry will have to make strong its market monitoring system.

The miseries of common people go up if the prices of essential commodities increase. We expect the policy makers will take proper steps to lessen people's sufferings.

It is very urgent to ensure measures for the rule violators. We hope, the government will take stern actions against greedy the traders. They will have to be brought under law if it is necessary.
