Tannery workers union celebrated Int'l Women's Day-17

Desk Report: ECOLEBAN project, Oxfam Bangladesh, SNV Bangladesh under the SWITCH-Asia program funded by European Union celebrated International Women's Day-17 along with tannery workers union, Bangladesh.

As a labor intensive sector, a huge no of women work force is engaged with the leather sector. For appreciating the contribution and ensuring the safety /rights of the women work force a rally was conducted, with the participation of women workers and owners at the event and then a group discussion was held at the Tannery workers unions' office Last Wednesday.

Discussion session was presided by the, Mr. Abul kalam Azad, president, Tannery Workers Union.MR. Shakawath Ullah , General Secretary Bangladesh Tanners Association- Owner of Salma tannery Ltd., Mr. Mizanur Rahman , Treasurer, Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA)-Owner Samata Leather Complex and Mr. Abdul Awal, Vice -chairman Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather goods and Footwear Exporters Association(BFLLFEA)-Owner Vulua Tannery was presented as special guest at the event. Mr. Sanjoy Kumar Thakur, Local project manager, ECOLEBAN project was the key note speaker of the event. Mr. Saimon Rahman from Oxfam, discussed about the importance of women involvement for the sustainable industrialization.

From the discussion session the speakers focused on the contribution of the women work force for ensuring their safety and rights with highly concerned. Some of the women workers are expressed their present problems and shared their experience at the leather sector.

The discussion session was concluded with the distribution of Aprons and flowers to the women workers with refreshments.

The program was organized by -Tannery workers Union and supported by ECOLEBAN project, Oxfam Bangladesh, SNV Bangladesh under the SWITCH-Asia program funded by European Union.
