‘There was a cache of chemicals inside buildings’

Staff Correspondent: "There was a cache of flammable chemicals inside the buildings damaged by the devastating fire that broke out in old Dhaka’s Chawkbazar area on Wednesday night," according to the committee formed to investigate into the fire incident.

The members of the committee came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after visiting the spot around 11:00 am on Friday.

Lieutenant colonel SM Zulfiqar Rahman, director (training, planning and development) of Fire Service and Civil Defence said, “The buildings in Churihatta had storage of flammable chemicals which helped spread the fire to adjacent areas in a quick manner.”

“Cans of deodorants and lighter refilling fuel were stored inside the buildings. These are flammable chemicals,” Zulfiqar, also the member of the committe, told the reporters.

The Chawkbazar fire incident took place at around 10.30 pm on Wednesday night that claimed 67 lives, including children and women.
