Tight security measures at Kashimpur jail

Staff Correspondent: Additional security measures have been taken at Kashimpur High Security Central Jail in Gazipur district over the execution process of Mufti Hannan and others.

A good number of law enforcers have been deployed at the jail and its adjacent areas.

Gazipur Police Super Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid visited the jail and other areas on Tuesday afternoon.

He said that police is conducting drive in Tongi, Konabari, Kashimpur and other areas to ensure tight security.

 

Earlier, the jail authority asked relatives of death-row convicts Mufti Abdul Hannan and his associate Sharif Shahedul Bipul to meet them in jail.

In 2004, former UK high commissioner Anwar Choudhury along with around 70 others was hurt and three were killed in the attack at the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet.

The Bangladesh-born envoy, barely 18 days into his new assignment, suffered minor leg injuries in the grenade attack after Juma prayers.

On December 23, 2008, the Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal sentenced Mufti Hannan, Bipul and Ripon to death, and Ovi and Abu Zandal to life imprisonment for the grenade attack and the killings.
