Trump dumps TPP trade deal

International Desk: US President Donald Trump has fulfilled a key campaign pledge by withdrawing the United States from the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

Trump signed an executive order on Monday pulling the US out of the trade deal.

Trump called the TPP order a ‘‘great thing for the American worker.’‘

In an Oval Office ceremony, Trump also signed another order imposing a federal hiring freeze and a directive to cut funding to US non-governmental organisations that provide abortions abroad.

The signing of the orders came after the president held talks with several senior American business leaders at the White House.

During that meeting Trump vowed to ‘‘massively’‘ cut regulations and taxes on companies that keep jobs in the US, claiming they could be cut by as much as 75 percent, ‘‘maybe more’‘.

“We will be cutting regulation massively. Now we are gonna have regulation and it will be just as strong and just as good and just as protective of the people as the regulation we have right now: The problem that we have with the regulation right now is that you can’t do anything,” President Trump said.

Meanwhile, the nomination of Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State seemed all but assured on Monday after Republican Senator Marco Rubio dropped his objections.

The Senate is also set to decide on whether to accept Trump’s choice for CIA director, Mike Pompeo.
