UN envoy visits Rohingya camps

UN envoy Yanghee Lee visiting Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar

Cox’s Bazar Correspondent: UN human rights envoy Yanghee Lee has visited Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar in order to know the overall condition of Rohingya refugees who have encroached to the Bangladesh territory from Myanmar.

The UN envoy visited Noyapara refugee camp, Leda unregistered camp in Teknaf, Shamlapur temporary Rohingya refugee camp and Naf river along the border from 10:30am to 1:00pm on Wednesday.

The UN's Special Rapporteur talked to the Rohingya refugees visiting the camps.

Talking to the Rohingya refugees, Lee came to know about harrowing accounts of systematic rape, killings and torture at the hands of the Myanmar military.

During her visit to the refugee camps, Lee was accompanied by representatives from different detective branches, police, BGB, UNHCR officials and NGO organisation.

Lee arrived in Bangladesh on Monday on a three-day visit. She earlier visited Myanmar on January 9 to 21. At that time, she visited Rakhine and Kachin states. During the visit, Lee also met Myanmar State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi and other top government officials.
