Uber celebrates one year of moving Dhaka forward

Staff Correspondent: Uber, the world's largest on-demand ride-sharing company, today celebrated its first anniversary in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

From aspirations of getting a car at the tap of a button to shaping decongested and liveable cities, Uber has been re-envisioning the way Dhaka moves for one year now.

Pradeep Parameswaran, Head, Central Operation, Uber India and South Asia, Uber said “Dhaka presented us with a challenge of transforming the transportation landscape and creating alternatives to a city burdened with a growing population of cars on its roads. With smartphones, technology that is already in our pockets, and utilizing the existing resources we can pave way for a Dhaka that moves with the lives of its people. We’d like to thank the government of Bangladesh, our business partners, riders and driver partners for their continued support and love in making this vision a reality in Dhaka.”

Highlights of the first 365 Days of Uber in Dhaka:

● In Dhaka, on average, an Uber can pickup you up in less than 7 mins.

● Most popular times for trips on Uber have been 8am-10am and 5pm-9pm; overall more people travel on weekends than on weekdays.

● An Uber was requested 1.5 million times in the month of November 2017.

● More than 2 lakh people took an Uber trip just in November 2017.

● More than 10k active driver partners every month and hundreds join every day.

● Uttara, Banani and Gulshan 1 have emerged as the most popular Uber destinations in the city.

● A single driver partner in Dhaka has taken 3350 trips - in kms the approximate equivalent of a trip to San Francisco and back!

● A single rider in Dhaka has taken 695 trips - in kms the approximate equivalent of a trip from Dhaka to Tokyo!

● We’ve seen a diverse bunch of driver partners - from big fleet operators; to a single car owner who drives full time; to professionals from telcos and banks putting their cars on Uber for some additional income; to students who’ve taken up driving on weekends to earn extra pocket money.

In its first year of operation in Dhaka, Uber launched new products, announced a strategic partnership and a safety initiative, to make riding with Uber a safe, reliable and comfortable experience for both riders and driver partners.
