Unregistered parties can contest polls

Staff Correspondent: The unregistered parties will be able to contest in the 11th parliamentary elections through alliance with registered parties, Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed said.

The EC secretary made the disclosure while briefing media at his office in capital’s Agargaon on Friday.

In reply to a question regarding political leaders of registered party, he said, “If any registered political party nominates candidates from unregistered parties, then we can’t stop them.”

If any party wants to join election making coalition, then they have to inform the commission within three days. Letter will be sent to political parties today in this regard, he said.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has been stripped off registration as a political party recently. Following the Jamaat issue, Helal Uddin said, “There is no such law in Bangladesh to block any candidates who is a member of other party to contest in the polls as an independent candidate.”

“No one will be allowed to run campaign until the allocation of electoral symbols. The election campaign materials must be removed from public places within the next seven days,” he added.
