Verdict on Khaleda’s bail Tuesday

Staff Correspondent: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court will deliver its judgment on Tuesday on the two leave-to-appeal petitions filed challenging BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's bail granted by the High Court in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

A four-member bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain fixed the date after closing the law point arguments from both sides on Wednesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, the SC adjourned for Wednesday the hearing on two leave-to-appeal petitions filed challenging BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's bail.

Senior lawyer AJ Mohammad Ali, Supreme Court Bar Association President Advocate Zainul Abedin, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and other senior lawyers stood for Khaleda Zia while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam moved for the state.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Dr Abdul Moin Khan and others attended the court house.

Earlier, on March 19, the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court stayed Khaleda Zia's bail till May 8 in the graft case.

The SC also allowed the State and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to file petitions against the HC order that granted bail to Khaleda.

On February 8 last, the Dhaka Special Court-5 convicted the former Prime Minister and BNP chairperson and sentenced her to five years' imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case. She was then sent to old central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the city.
