‘WB is not above law’

Law Minister Anisul Haq

Staff Correspondent: Law Minister Anisul Huq said the World Bank (WB) is not above the law.

The minister came up with the remark while talking to reporters after inaugurating a training programme for district and sessions judges at Judicial Administration Training Institute in the capital on Thursday.

The law minister said, “I clearly say the World Bank is not above the law. If image of a person is tarnished with any false allegation, the person can certainly take action. The High Court has already issued a rule in this regard. The issue should be solved through the court as it reaches up to the court.”

In reply to a query, he said it was not mentioned in the agreement signed by Bangladesh and the World Bank that legal action can be taken against the World Bank if it cancels the loan.

Anisul Huq said the World Bank has to take necessary measures in order to get back the trust of other countries of the world including Bangladesh.

The World Bank can take action against its officials who brought false corruption allegation and hatched conspiracy against Bangladesh, he said.

“We want remedy of the conduct that World Bank has done with Bangladesh about financing Padma bridge construction,” Anisul Huq said, adding that the World Bank has to apologise to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for its conduct and to the people who have become victims due to the false allegation.

Law and Justice Division Secretary Abu Saleh Sheikh Mohammad Zahirul Haque and Director General of Judicial Administration Training Institute Justice Khandaker Musa Khaled were present at the inaugural session.
