Walton face 9-wicket defeat in first match

Sport Desk: Walton Central Zone faced a 9-wicket defeat to Islami Bank East Zone in the first match of the fifth season of Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL), the country's franchise based first class cricket tournament.

 

Poor batting performance of the defending champions led to defeat on Monday with a full day and an hour play remaining.

 

Batting first at Shaheed Chandu Stadium in Bogra, Walton scored only 224 in the first innings thanks to bowlers Mosharraf  Hossain and Sharif who scored 46 not out and 44 respectively.

 

 

A double ton from opener Liton Kumar Das led East Zone to put 367 on the scoreboard taking a 143-run lead in the first innings.

 

This was Liton's maiden double ton in any form of cricket. He was in the crease for almost 6 hours and scored 219 runs off 241 balls hitting 26 fours and 4 sixes.

 

Trailing by 143 runs, Walton Central Zone also showed the same poor batting in the second innings and scored only 198 runs with a half century from opener Shamsur Rahman.

 

 

East Zone needed only 55 runs to win the match which they easily collected for one wicket with an hour and a full day remaining.

Islami Bank East Zone 367 (88.3 overs), Liton 219, Mehadi 41, Abul Hasan 40 (Shuvagata 5/101, Taiabur 3/50) and 57/1 (13.4 overs) Zakir 33*, Mehadi 14* (Shamsur 1/16).

 

Results: Islami Bank East Zone won by 9 wickets.
