KMA Hasnat: The government has taken a decision to provide families of war-wounded and martyred freedom fighters' tax exemption facility for car.

Under the facility, war-wounded freedom fighters, wives of martyred freedom fighters, freedom fighters who achieved titles and wives of war-wounded freedom fighters or title achieved freedom fighters will get exemption of tax and fitness charge for a car each.

The Finance Ministry has given nod to a proposal of Road Transport and Bridges Ministry in this regard.

A notification will be issued in this connection very soon.

According to sources of Finance Ministry, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) under the Road Transport and Bridges Ministry sent a letter to the Finance Ministry seeking approval of road tax and fitness charge release for war-wounded and martyred freedom fighters’ families under 23 (9) sub-clause of Motor Vehicles Rules, 1966.

In reply to the letter, the Finance Ministry said, “There is no scope of releasing fitness charges for vehicles under the existing law. But the facility can be given under the Memorandum No.-MDRT / 1A-1/85 (Part-2) -24 dated-06-02-1986 of Road and Road Transport Division under the former Communication Ministry, as vehicles of Red Crescent are getting the facility for its social welfare activities,” according to the sources.

The sources further said, “In the reply the Finance Minister also wrote that the freedom fighters are getting many of facilities in different ways. So, there is no need to extend the facilities in large. But the proposed facility for tax exemption of car can be limited among a definite number of freedom fighters and inherits.”
