Diplomatic Correspondent: Washington DC, the capital of United States, has declared March 26, 2019, as ‘Bangladesh Day’ to commemorate the 49th anniversary of the nation’s independence.
The proclamation was declared by Muriel Bowser, mayor of Washington, said a press release of Bangladesh’s embassy on Tuesday.
“I, the mayor of Washington DC, congratulate the ambassador and all the people of Bangladesh on this special occasion, and hereby declare March 26, 2019, as Bangladesh Day,” said the proclamation.
“On this day, people of Bangladesh remember the leadership of the father of their nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the valor of the freedom fighters that led to the independence of their country,” the mayor wrote.
She also thanked the embassy of Bangladesh for its contributions to the cultural diversity of the city and its participation in various local events.
Mentionable, Bangabandhu declared independence on this day in 1971 after the Pakistan Army committed genocide against unarmed Bangalee civilians. An estimated three million people were killed and 200,000 women were dishonoured by the Pakistan occupation force and their local collaborators during the nine-month long war.
