‘We all are behind corruption’

Anti-Corruption Commission Chairman Iqbal Mahmood

Staff Correspondent: Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Iqbal Mahmood said, “We all are behind corruption. You are also a part of corruption if you could not prevent it. The ACC also finds its failure to curb corruption as people’s participation is not satisfactory. We all are responsible for that.”

Iqbal Mahmood made the remarks at a function held over the revelation of the findings of the Corruption Perceptions Index-2017 of Transparency International at ACC head office in Dhaka on Sunday noon.

The ACC chairman said people from all walks of life including mass media, teachers and students will have to come up with their cooperation to rein in corruption. If people are not made conscious about the concept of corruption, it will not be possible to curtail corruption.

Bangladesh has moved up two notches and now ranked 143rd among the 180 countries in the Berlin-based Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2017. On the scale of 100, Bangladesh has scored 28 among all the countries, an increase by two points compared to 26 of CPI 2016.

Bangladesh was earlier placed at the bottom of the list for five successive years from 2001-2005. In 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, it was ranked 3, 7, 10, 13, and 12 respectively while in 2011 and 2012, Bangladesh was 13th, 16th in 2013, 14th in 2014, 13th in 2015.

In 2017, the country ranked as 17th most corrupt country in the world – a marginal improvement from the identity of 15th most corrupted country compared to 2016.
