Why no bail for Apan Jewellers owners: HC

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) issued a rule asking the government as to why three owners of Apan Jewellers -- Dilzar Ahmed, Gulzar Ahmed and Azad Ahmed -- should not be granted bail in five money laundering cases.

The court also asked the government to reply the rule in next two weeks.

The HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim came up with the rule after hearing separate petitions on Wednesday.

The three owners of Apan Jewellers recently filed the petitions seeking bail in the cases.

Senior lawyer AM Amin Uddin stood for the petitioners while Deputy Attorney General Farhad Ahmed and Assistant Attorney General Md Yousuf Mahmud Morshed represented the state in the court during the hearing.

The Directorate of Tariff Intelligence Investigation filed the cases with Gulshan, Dhanmondi, Uttara and Ramna police stations on August 12 on charge of laundering money.

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) on August 12 sued three owners of Apan Jewellers on the charge of money laundering in importing around 15.3 maunds of gold.
