Why sex workers shouldn’t be rehabilitated: HC

Staff Correspondent: The High Court (HC) on Wednesday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the inaction of the law enforcement agencies to stop the brothels operating in the country should not be declared illegal.

In the rule, the court also asked the authorities to explain why they should not be directed to rehabilitate the sex workers.

An HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Justice Rajik Al Jalil came up with the rule following a writ petition filed by lawyers Sohel Islam Khan and Shafikul Kajol.

Secretaries of the home ministry and social welfare ministry and inspector general of police (IGP) have been made respondents to the rule.

The writ petition was filed the HC attaching two reports relating to sales of girls to the brothels. The reports were published on two national dailies on June 23 and January 5 this year respectively.
