Workers-police clash: Joint operation at Gabtoli

Staff Correspondent: Members of police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) jointly conducted a drive at the capital's Gabtoli to disperse the transport workers from roads who went on strike protesting death and life-term sentenced to two drivers on late Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday evening, agitated transport workers set a police box and a wrecker on fire. They also set some vehicles of media on fire after vandalising that prompted law enforcers to go on hard line.

Transport workers locked into a clash with cops as they tried to disperse them from roads, leaving eight people including four policemen injured.

Police hurled tear shells and fired blank shots to remove the demonstrators from roads.

Mohammad Yousuf Ali, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), confirmed the news.

The injured cops were identified as Rabiul Islam, 22, Anik, 23, Mizu Ahmed, 23, Rafiqul Islam, 24.

The other who were hurt in the clash were known as labourer Rabiul, 40, cattle trader Delwar, 55, truck driver Hasnain, 20, and hotel worker Rifat, 20.

Transport workers enforced indefinite strike protesting court of sentencing a Chuadanga driver to life-term and a Savar driver to death for killing people in road crashes.
