Writ filed for Khaleda Zia

Staff Correspondent: A writ petition has been filed to the High Court (HC) for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia challenging legality of not providing Vakalatnama (power of attorney) with her signature.

Instruction was also sought in the writ petition to provide Vakalatnama with the signature of BNP Chief.

BNP law affairs secretary Barrister Kaiser Kamal filed the petition on behalf of the party chief Khaleda Zia on Thursday.

Secretary for Home Ministry, IG Prisons and Jail Superintendent were made defendants in the writ petition.

Khaleda’s lawyer advocate M Aminul Islam said, “There are many case filed against BNP Chief Khaleda Zia. To take steps in the cases, Vakalatnama with her signature is needed. We requested the jail authorities to provide her Vakalatnama with signature, but the authorities are wasting time. It is violating Khaleda’s legal rights.”

“A person provides Vakalatnama when he/she appoints a lawyer. So, there is no scope for the jail authorities to make any obstruction to provide it,” he added.
