589 attacked with arsenic diseases in Khulna

Staff Correspondent, Khulna: About a 589 people are attacked with Arsenic related disease in 42 unions of nine regions in Khulna district.  

In 2003, the number of arsenic patients was 480, which increased to 538 in 2011.

Public Health engineering Department (PHED) sources said that the water level is going down abnormally due to rooftop water harvesting. As a result, the poisonous substances like arsenic are being mixed with water. The existence of arsenic found in 25,693 of 59,821 shallow tube-wells.

Civil surgeon office sources said that the arsenic affected areas are- Magurghona of Dumuria upazila, Haridhali, Kapilmuni, Lata, Deluti, Sholadana, Lashkar, Gadaipur, Radhuli, Chandkhali of Paikgachha upazila, Amadi, Bagali, Maharajpur of Koyra upazila, Chalna, Dakope, Tildanga, Kamarkhola of Dacope upazila, Jalma, Bhandarkort, Amirpur of Batiaghata upazila, Aijgati, Shifala, Noihati, TS Bahirdia, Ghatbhog of Rupsha upazila, Chagaldah, Chaciadah, Ajgara, Madhupur, Barasat of Terkhada upazila, Zogipol, Senhati, Dighalia, Gazirhat and Barakpur of Dighalia upazila.
