70 shanties gutted in N’ganj fire

Staff Correspondent, Narayanganj: About 70 shanties were gutted after a fire broke out at a slum in the area adjacent to Narayanganj Zila Parishad complex early Friday.

Many houses were being used as godown of jhut (garment scraps), sources said.

Abdullah Arefin, deputy assistant director of Narayanganj fire station, said the fire broke out around 3:30am and soon spread to adjacent warehouses and makeshift houses, burning down huge garment scraps.

On information, seven fire fighting units rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control after one and half hour’s efforts, he added.

The extent of loss from the fire could not be known immediately.
