AL, BNP men lock into clash at Nayapaltan

A clash has erupted between supporters of Awami League nominated Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and BNP candidate Ishrage Hossain of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

The incident took place in front of BNP’s central office in the capital’s Nayapaltan area around 5:45pm on Saturday.

People of both groups engaged in chase and counter-chase during there.

According to police, supporters of BNP candidate Ishraque Hossain brought out a procession from the party office in the evening. At same time, another procession was brought out by Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh’s supporters from Nightingale intersection.  Both the processions confronted at Nayapaltan that created excitement among people of each group. At one stage, the excitement turned into clash.

BNP activists were chanting slogans demanding cancellation of polls. At the moment, Awami League men hurled brick bats from the opposite side. Police, however, chased them several times.

More than a hundred police men were deployed at the spot as tension was prevailing in the area till the report was filed at 6:45pm.

It was learnt that Awami League supporters fired three blank shots during the clash.
