Bangladesh survive the second day

Bangladesh survived a testing final period on day two to take the match in the third day after reaching 152-6 in their second innings with Mushfiqur Rahim leading the way with an unbeaten 59 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday.

Earlier, India declared their first innings for 347-9 and reduced Bangladesh to 7-2 in just five overs in the second session.

Bangladesh lost Mohammad Mithun (six) and Imrul Kayes (five) early on the final session as Bangladesh were at risk of losing the match inside the second day.

But Mushfiq and Mahmudullah then showed some fight, forming a 69-run stand for the fifth wicket before the latter was retired hurt on 39 after suffering a hamstring injury with the score on 82-4.

Mushfiq carried on his counter-attacking innings, reaching his 50 off just 54 balls as Bangladesh ended the day still trailing India by 89 runs.

Earlier, India took a 241-run lead with Virat Kohli making 132, his 27th Test hundred, while Al-Amin and Jayed claimed 3-81 and 3-95 respectively Ebadot claimed 2-77.

In opening session, Bangladesh, who were 106 all out in the first innings, toiled with the ball until substitute Taijul forced Ajinkya Rahane to give a catch to Ebadot at backward point in the 16th over of the day.

Rahane, who was unbeaten on 23 overnight, made 51 off 69 balls with seven boundaries.

Kohli, at the other end, brought up his 27th Test century with two runs off a Taijul delivery.

Kohli, who took exactly same number of innings that his idol Sachin Tendulkar required for 27 Test centuries, opened up after he reached the three-figure mark and struck Jayed four consecutive boundaries in one over.
