Bangladesh up 4 notches on Global Peace Index

Bangladesh has moved 4 notches in the Global Peace Index (GPI)-2020.

According to the 2020 Global Peace Index (GPI) released in London by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the country has been ranked 97th out of 163 countries with a global score of 2.121. Last year, its position was 101.

The country, however, retained its position in South Asia as it is the fourth most peaceful nation in the region.

In the South Asia, Bhutan has been ranked the top position followed by Nepal and Sri Lanka.

India, Pakistan and Afghanistan have been ranked the fifth, sixth and seventh position respectively.

Among South Asia countries, Bangladesh remains in fourth place leaving behind India (139th place), Pakistan (152nd place) and Afghanistan (163rd place), and now sits behind Bhutan (1.501), Sri Lanka (1.974) and Nepal (1.974).

Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. It is joined at the top of the index by New Zealand, Portugal, Austria and Denmark.

Afghanistan is now the least peaceful country in the world.

The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit think tank dedicated to shifting the world's focus to peace as a positive, achievable, and tangible measure of human well-being and progress. It has offices in Sydney, New York and Mexico City.
