City University fined Tk 10 lakh

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has fined Tk10 lakh to the City University for violating a provision of University Grants Commission (UGC) in admitting students in the Law department.

A bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order after hearing a petition on Wednesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Appellate Division summoned the vice-chancellor of the City University.

Today, he appeared before the court and was ordered to pay the fine to the Bangladesh Bar Council so that the candidates who passed law from the university can fill up their forms and registration card to appear for the Bar Council test.

Advocate A Y Moshiuzzaman appeared in the court on behalf of Bangladesh Bar Council while Senior Advocate AM Aminuddin stood for the students.

As per the UGC provision, a private university can't admit more than 50 students    in LLB program in one semester. More than 50 students of the City University filed an application to appear for the Bar Council test. But Bar Council refused to take more than 50 students. Following this, 25 students filed a writ petition with the High Court.

Later, the High Court ordered the Bangladesh Bar Council to allow the 25 students who passed law from the university to fill up their forms and registration card so that they can appear for the Bar Council test. The Bar Council filed an appeal with the Appellate Division against the HC order.
