Cox's Bazar Correspondent: Bangladesh’s first deep-sea port will be built at Matarbari financed by Japan.
Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will finance in the project and Chittagong seaport authority will play the leading role. Final survey will be started from September as the primary survey shows positive result.
Waters surrounding Bangladesh’s two main ports -- Chittagong and Mongla -- are so shallow that vessels have to wait for an incoming tide to berth and an outgoing one to leave. Bigger ships currently need to transfer their loads to smaller vessels. The longer turnaround can cost an extra $15,000 per day, making Chittagong several times pricier than ports in neighboring countries.
The Matarbari port, at 18 meters (59 feet), would be deep enough to host the largest container vessels, according to IHS’s Atkinson.
Mohammad Zafar Alam, Member (admin and planning) of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) said that Matarbari sea port to be built 50 kilometers away from the Chittagong port.
Lt Col Forkan Ahmed (Retd) as the chairman of Cox's Bazar Development Authority said that the transportation of goods will be easier after the project. Overall, Bangladesh's economy will get pace.
