Country’s first liver transplant patient dies of dengue

Staff Correspondent: The first-ever liver transplant patient at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) died of dengue, the authority said.

BSMMU Vice-Chancellor professor Dr Kanak Kanti Barua confirmed the matter on Sunday.

Although the patient Siratul Islam, 20, died on August 12 but the matter came to light many days later.

Professor Kanak Kanti Barua said, Siratul went to his home from hospital after the successful transplant. But, he was later infected with dengue at home and came back to the BSMMU at the last stage during Eid-ul-Azha holidays.

Earlier on June 24, Professor Dr Zulfiqar Rahman Khan, chairman of BSMMU's Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Liver Transplant Surgery Department conducted first-ever liver transplant surgery successfully.

India’s renowned liver transplant surgeon Dr P Balachandra Menon and his team assisted in the surgery. A total of 60 members’ team joined the historical operation.
