Cyclone ‘Bulbul’ may hit coasts tonight

The cyclonic storm ‘Bulbul’ formed over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and set to hit West Bengal and Khulna coasts tonight (Saturday).
It is heading towards the country’s coastal regions from the Bay of Bengal with a maximum sustained wind speed of 130 kmph rising to 150 kmph in gusts, said Ruhul Quddus, a meteorologist of the Dhaka met office.
Low-lying areas of the coastal districts are “likely to be inundated by storm surge of 5-7 feet height above normal astronomical tide” because of the approaching cyclone.
The met office, in a special bulletin, has asked Mongla and Payra ports to hoist great danger signal-10.
Besides, the Chattogram port has been asked to hoist signal number 9 and Cox’s Bazar signal number-4.
Coastal districts of Bhola, Barguna, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalakathi, Bagherhat, Khulna, and Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are under great danger signal number-10.
Coastal districts of Chattogram, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur and their offshore islands and chars are under great danger signal number-9.
At 12.00pm on Saturday, cyclone ‘Bulbul’ was about 310 southwest of Mongla port, 335km southwest of Payra port and 490km southwest of Chattogram port.
