Economists wary of export earning target

Economists expressed concern over the export earning target set by the government, saying the target could not be achieved due to ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on Thursday (July 16) announced the new export earning target. He said, the government has fixed 4,800 crore USD export target for the current fiscal year (2020-21).

He said, 4,100 crore USD has been fixed for goods export sector and 7,000 crore USD for the service export sector.

Following the issue, some economists said, survival is the main challenge during this Coronavirus crisis. Entrepreneurs, exporters and workers have to survive first. If the production remain active then all will survive. But, the whole world is in an abnormal situation now. Bangladesh is not out of that. Covid-19 infections have been increased here. Workers are in serious trouble now.

Private research organization South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM) Executive Director Dr Selim Raihan said, world commerce is not in good situation. World Bank, IMF and other international organizations hinted a fall in the growth, demand, consumption and supply chain.
