Shibir-police clash in Joypurhat: 3 killed, section 144 imposed

District Correspondent, JOYPURHAT, Dec 15: At least three people were killed in a clash between the activists of Jamaat-Shibir and law enforcers in the district`s Purano Poil on Sunday afternoon.

The deceased were identified as Firoz Hossain, 30, a van puller and son of late Fazlur Rahman, Insan, 27, son of Momtaj Ali of Halutti village, and Shakib, Hossain, 25, son of Iqbal Hossain of Jalatul village in the upazila.

Following the incident, the local administration imposed section 144 in the area from 5pm Sunday to 6am Monday.

Witnesses said Shibir activists torched the Krishi Bank branch in Purano Poil at around 4:30pm. Police successfully dispersed the Shibir activists.

Later, around 300 to 400 villagers, including Jamaat and Shibir activists, launched an attack on the law enforcers with bows and arrows.

Police fired rubber bullets to bring the situation under control that left three dead.

The Shibir activists also torched a number of vehicles in Sadar upazila in the evening which forced the local administration to impose section 144.
