SHARIATPUR, Aug 24: Former president of Shariatpur Municipality Unit of Chhatra Shibir BM Yusuf Ali has joined Awami League. He formally joined the Awami League at a function held at Atong Government Primary School ground under Shariatpur Sadar upazila on Friday.

BM Yusuf Ali is the Managing Director of Popular Life Insurance Company Ltd. He served as Shariatpur Municipality Unit of Chhatra Shibir president from 1983 to 1990.

When asked how he would exercise the Awami League politics abandoning the Jamaat-Shibir politics, BM Yusuf Ali said, "I was involved in Shibir`s politics during my student life. Later, I joined Jatiya Party when it came to power. I took part in different programes of Awami League for a long time. I also played a key role in the election of BM Mozammel Huq MP of the ruling party owing to my personal relationship with him."

BM Mozammel Huq, an MP of Shariatpur-1 constituency and organising secretary of Awami League, said Yusuf Ali had long been involved in Awami League politics. He was involved in Chhatra Shibir politics in the past. But, now he has no relation with Jamaat-Shibir politics.

Besides, Mozammel said many young men and women of Shariatpur area work at his company. They will also get involved in Awami League politics from now on.

Local sources said a discussion was organised at Atong Government Primary School ground under Shariatpur Sadar upazila in observance of the National Mourning Day. BM Yusuf Ali himself organised the discussion. At the discussion, BM Mozammel Huq formally announced the name of BM Yusuf Ali`s joining Awami League.

District Awami League vice-president Khoka Sikder, general secretary Anal Kumar Dey, joint general secretary Mirza Hazrat Ali, Acting president of Poura Awami League MA Majlish Khan, among others, were present at the podium at that time.

However, none except BM Mozammel Huq and BM Yusuf Ali spoke at the discussion.

District Jubo League president MM Jahangir said he would never like to see any leader or activist of any anti-independence organisation. They are now joining Awami League to avail interim benefits and harming the Awami League.
